Unemployment was the great scourge of the 1930s. It brought with it poverty, and posed a problem that the government seemed completely unable to tackle.

Suggested line of enquiry (“line of enquiry” = problemstilling): How did the government try to tackle the problem of unemployment in the 1930s? What results did its policies have? What other remedies were suggested by other people, such as trade unions, and economists?
